Cycling: Iceland Ring Road Day 14: Laugarvatn to Reykjavík

Day 14 of my Iceland cycling trip. The final day of cycling with a final and short push to reach Reykjavík Campsite.

Sunday, 6th of August, 2023

Cold and wet, the day was grey and dreary, but I was filled with energy. The final segment and I would be finished with my tour.

I stopped at the Þingvellir national park along the way and did some light walking around, learning about the first parliament that Iceland society had. I viewed a tiny little waterfall there but I was very much done with these sights after two weeks of travel.

I returned to the busy roads that I hated when leaving Reykjavík but this time I discovered a secret bike path that rode parallel to the main road and casually cycled with ease back into Reykjavík. When I reached Reykjavik campsite, I took my final photo of the tour next to the sign and made my way in. That was it! Fourteen days of cycling and I had finished 1668km on my Canyon Grizl around Iceland.

On the website for the campsite they claim that cyclists can get a discount if they come by bike to support eco-friendly tourism but you need to check-in in person at the reception. I found the reception in the nearby Dalur hostel and learned that you actually must check-in online but there is a not-so-secret cycling coupon code available at the reception to reduce the price.

I set up camp and it hits me, it’s done, it’s over. I was happy that it’s done but at the same time I was sad that it was over. And while I was alone there in that campsite, a solo traveller at the end of his travels, I felt satisfied with the many interesting but fleeting connections I had made on this island.
