Cycling: Iceland Ring Road Day 10: Skaftafell to Vik

Day 10 of my Iceland cycling trip. A day of cycling with tailwinds instead of headwinds for a change.

Wednesday, 2nd of August, 2023

I took a small walk/hike up the trail in the morning to see the Skaftafell. It was very easy with rubber matting installed at many points to make it possible without hiking boots. (Although I am young and balanced and experienced so it may not be so easy for everyone). Afterwards, I packed up my gear, grabbed one last shower, and got back on the road.

I had an amazing tailwind pushing me along and combined with the good road conditions it was a delightful cycle. The little hills were not a problem at this point. I did some touristic sightseeing points such as the Fjaðrárgljúfur but skipped others like the moss walk area. At that point, I had already seen the special Iceland moss all over the island… I didn’t need a sightseeing spot for it.

Most of the day was fun and easy cycling but in the late afternoon the wind changed direction and I ended up fighting a strong headwind out of nowhere. I skipped the remaining touristic sightseeing spots on that segment, lacking the energy to make anymore detours. I summoned my strength together and pushed onwards to Vik in the early evening and ran into Leonardo on the road! That evening we met again on the Vik campsite. It was a very cosy campsite with a nice aesthetic feeling. Little ledges circled the grounds providing natural separation between the tents. There was a really delightful energy here.
